We Ran (Elektra) |
Long before she got hooked on Nelson Riddle classics or dug into her ancestral
mariachi roots, Ronstadt ruled the airwaves by giving classics from the Stones,
Motown, and country music a decidely Californian light-rock treatment. Here,
accompanied by her longtime guitarist Waddy Wachtel, Ronstadt recaptures the
spirit of her early '70s heyday, with glowing results. Despite a sandy-eyed
lilt on a few tracks, overall she sounds wiser, not weathered. Her renditions
of Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind" and John Hiatt's "When We Ran"
rival her peak '70s hits: In a voice that's still as smooth as a pearl, she
sings of lost innocence and old flames that continue to burn deep within.
